Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has announced the creation of Xbox Labs, a new team inside Microsoft Gaming that will turn emerging ideas into things players and developers can actually try. The unit is described as a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists drawn from existing staff, not new hires.
The move follows weeks of viral experiments in which modders used AI tools to decompile and recompile old games, porting Windows PC builds to Apple silicon and getting titles like Halo running inside a web browser. Sharma says those projects "challenge long-held assumptions about our industry" and pointed to AI-assisted code porting as proof that games can be made easier to access, old titles given new life, and players turned into creators.
What Xbox Labs will actually do
According to GamesIndustry.biz, Xbox Labs will handle rapid development, iteration and testing of tools, products and features, with success measured by end-user reaction rather than internal targets. Sharma wrote that the team will "build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating."
The Verge notes that the group will experiment with decompiling and recompiling games, the same techniques behind the recent wave of AI-powered ports and mashups, including skateboarding modded into Call of Duty. Xbox says any tools and learnings will be shared with developers.
