Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip8 has arrived, and the first reviews are in. Wired's Simon Hill gave the compact foldable a 7/10, calling it the slimmest and lightest option in its category. The phone shaves off 0.55 millimeters and 8 grams compared to the Z Flip7, thanks to a refined hinge that also makes the crease less noticeable.
But the improvements come at a cost. The Z Flip8 starts at $1,200, a $100 increase over last year's model. Wired notes that if you already own a Z Flip7, there's little reason to upgrade. For anyone new to foldables, however, it remains one of the most practical designs on the market.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 specs and design
The Galaxy Z Flip8 keeps the same screen sizes as its predecessor but upgrades the chip to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, the same processor found in Samsung's larger foldables. Wired reports excellent performance with no stutters, though the compact body can get warm during long gaming sessions and may throttle.
Battery life is described as average. The 4,300mAh silicon-carbon battery is fine for casual use, but heavy users will need a power bank. Charging speeds remain modest at 25W wired and 15W wireless, and Samsung still hasn't added Qi2 magnetic charging.
The main 50MP camera delivers good results in most situations, with some noise in low light. The 12MP ultrawide is a step down in quality, and there's no telephoto lens. Wired also highlights new AI features like My FanCam and Horizon Lock for video stabilization.
