Apple is still struggling to meet demand for its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, and executives say they cannot predict when supply and demand will balance. The $1,999 device launched last month with a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, and preorders sold out quickly, with some shipments now expected in 2027.
During the company's fiscal fourth-quarter earnings call on Monday, Apple CEO John Ternus told Reuters that Apple is "working hard to get it to as many customers as quickly as possible, but at this point, we're not able to predict when supply and demand will be in balance." COO Sabih Khan echoed that message on the call, saying the production ramp is going well but that timing remains uncertain.
iPhone Duo specs and shipping delays
The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable, and demand has been intense. According to a Financial Times report cited by TechCrunch, Apple described demand as "nothing short of extraordinary" after the device sold out on its website within hours, pushing delivery dates into next year. Customers who did not wait in line at an Apple Store or jump on preorders immediately are now facing ship times that stretch into 2027. Verizon has been apologizing to customers for the delays by offering gift cards.
The prolonged delays are notable for a company known for its efficient supply chain, but Apple is not alone. Soaring demand for memory chips from the AI industry has driven up component costs across the hardware sector, threatening higher device prices. Apple has already raised prices on several products, decisions Khan said were made "reluctantly."
