What began as a routine smart speaker has turned into a serious data drain for some Google Home Speaker owners. Over the past week, users on Reddit and reporters at 9to5Google have documented the device downloading hundreds of gigabytes of data in the background, apparently without any user request. According to The Verge, the bug appears to be tied to the speaker repeatedly failing to download and install a firmware update.
The timing matters: many of the downloads happen in the early hours of the morning, when the speaker is otherwise idle. Google has acknowledged the problem and says a fix is already rolling out that should address it for users.
How much data is a Google Home Speaker using?
The figures shared so far are hard to ignore. One Reddit user said his speaker was consuming more than 200GB per day, while a 9to5Google writer reported that a lightly used Home Speaker pulled 17GB in a single 24-hour window — including a 9.99GB download at 3 a.m. The same unit logged 41GB on October 13, and a total of 132GB over 30 days.
And it isn't happening to everyone. Another lightly used Home Speaker in a different household downloaded just 2GB over the same month, and The Verge reports the pattern is mostly tied to the new Google Home Speaker model. Other Google and Nest devices — including several Nest Hubs in the same home — have not shown the issue.
- There is no agreed-upon explanation of how many devices are affected. The Verge says it's unclear how widespread the issue is.
- There is no agreed-upon root cause: reports point to failed firmware update attempts, but Google has not publicly detailed the cause.
- Data-use tracking from Nest Wifi: Google Home app > Wifi tab > Devices > select the speaker > Device usage graphs.
