Google announced on Tuesday that anyone with a standard Google account can now build personal Android apps for free in Google AI Studio, no coding experience required. The apps run only on your own device through a private section of Google Play and are not listed publicly.
The feature is initially available to users in the US aged 18 and up, with select other markets also included according to Ars Technica. Google says users will be able to share their creations with close friends and family in the coming months.
How to build a personal Android app with AI Studio
The new tool works with the existing app creator in AI Studio, but removes the need for USB debugging or a PC connection. You describe what you want in a prompt, and Gemini generates the app. While it is being created, you can add features you may have missed, make light edits once it is complete, or scrap it and start over.
Apps built this way are stored in a new Personal Library accessible from the Play Store app on your phone, tablet or computer. Private apps are not reviewed by Google, but they must still comply with the company’s existing Play Store policies. There is no charge to experiment or build.
- No developer account or coding experience needed
- Free to build and experiment
- Apps install on your device with one click
- Stored privately in a Personal Library within Google Play
