Google has officially unveiled the Fitbit Edge, a new fitness tracker priced at $179.99 that replaces the Fitbit Charge 6 and marks the end of the Charge line, according to Bloomberg. The Edge goes on sale October 27, with pre-orders already open on the Google Store.
At the same time, Google is bringing Health Guardian, first introduced over the summer for the Pixel Watch, to the Fitbit Air and the new Fitbit Edge for Google Health Premium subscribers later this month. A broader automatic activity tracking upgrade is also rolling out to the Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge and Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5.
Fitbit Edge specs and price
The Fitbit Edge sits between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch: a slim, pill-shaped tracker with a 1.34-inch OLED display and Pixel Watch features at a Fitbit-friendly price. It works with both Android and iPhone through the Google Health app, which replaced the Fitbit app earlier this year.
Google says the Edge delivers 15 percent more accurate sleep stage detection than previous generations, and a 40 percent improvement in built-in GPS accuracy. It also inherits an altimeter for elevation and floors climbed, plus a far-field skin temperature sensor. One notable omission: there is no NFC sensor, so contactless payments via Google Wallet are not supported, a downgrade from the Charge 6.
- 1.34-inch oval OLED display, up from the Charge 6's 1.04-inch screen
- User-replaceable 65mAh battery, a Fitbit first, charged in about 90 minutes
- Up to seven days of battery life, or a full day from a five-minute charge
