WhatsApp has introduced guest calling, a feature that lets people join a call without a WhatsApp account. According to Engadget and The Verge, the Meta-owned service now lets you share a call link that opens in a browser, so guests do not need to install the app or sign up to take part.
The move matters because WhatsApp is used by billions of people, but calls were always limited to registered users. Now a tutor, a classmate or a colleague can click a link and join a one-on-one or group call, as long as they are on a computer browser and admitted by the host.
WhatsApp guest calling rules and limits
The three reports agree on the core experience: open the Calls tab in WhatsApp, tap the plus icon, create a link and send it to the people you want to talk to. Guests type their name, wait for the host to approve them, then join the call.
There are clear restrictions. Guests cannot start a call, view other users' phone numbers, send messages or add more people to the call. The Verge notes that guests can be removed from the call at any time by the host.
- Guests need a host's approval and wait in a waiting room before joining.
- Only account holders can create a call link; guests cannot start a call.
- Group calls support up to 32 people, according to 9to5Google.
- Guests can raise their hand, share their screen and react with emojis.
