TikTok announced this week that it is adding an in-app restaurant guide called "Must Eat," the latest step in its push beyond social media and toward a so-called super app. The community-driven feature pulls from more than 40 million posts and comments to build restaurant recommendations and curated lists, according to TechCrunch, and lets users browse by city and filter by cuisine, price, rating and location.
The move matters because it puts TikTok in more direct competition with Yelp and Google Maps, and shows how the platform is trying to keep users inside its walls for everyday decisions, from what they buy to where they eat. A super app, like China's WeChat, bundles messaging, payments, shopping and services into one destination. Whether that model can work outside China is an open question, but TikTok is clearly testing it.
TikTok's super app features so far
Beyond restaurant discovery, TikTok has steadily stacked services onto its core video feed. TikTok Shop is its biggest leap: it began testing in 2021 and launched in the U.S. in 2023, and has since competed with Amazon and Shein.
The company has also moved into travel and sports. TikTok GO, launched in May, lets U.S. users discover and book hotels, attractions and experiences without leaving the app, while a dedicated FIFA World Cup hub arrived in early June with scores, schedules and highlights through its TikTok GamePlan product. TikTok also has partnerships with Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball.
- TikTok Shop: tested from 2021, launched in the U.S. in 2023; U.S. sales grew 407% in 2024 and 108% in 2025 to reach $15.82 billion, per eMarketer.
- TikTok GO: launched in May in the U.S. for discovering and booking hotels, attractions and experiences inside the app.
