Mac users who do not want Apple Intelligence on their machines now have a way to remove it. A developer known as Om Lahore published RemoveMacAI, an open-source command-line tool that turns off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and deletes the AI models behind it, freeing up storage on the disk.
The tool appeared on GitHub last week and spread quickly, reaching 1,700 stars and drawing attention from MacRumors, The Verge, Ars Technica and 9to5Mac. The interest is simple: macOS 27 Golden Gate no longer offers a toggle to switch Apple Intelligence off, so users who do not use it still carry its models on their Macs.
Why Apple Intelligence takes up so much space on macOS 27
On macOS 26, Apple Intelligence could require up to 7GB of storage. On macOS 27, Apple says its latest models can need up to 14GB on newer Macs. In practice, the space taken can go higher: The Verge noted that the models can occupy more than 30GB, while the developer himself puts the figure at around 12GB.
That difference matters most on Macs with smaller drives, particularly 256GB models. Unlike earlier macOS versions, macOS 27 has no single switch to disable Apple Intelligence. Users can turn off individual features in Settings, but the underlying models stay on the disk and continue to take up room.
What RemoveMacAI removes and what stops working
According to its developer, RemoveMacAI uses a configuration profile approved in System Settings and Apple's own asset service. System Integrity Protection stays on and nothing inside /System is touched directly. The developer says the process is fully reversible, and that users can remove only the Apple Intelligence features they do not want while keeping the others.
The tool disables a long list of features, from Siri to image generation. Not everything on the Mac is affected: dictation is a separate setting and its speech models are not removed, so it keeps working.
