Reflection AI has unveiled Beam, its first open-weight artificial intelligence model, pitched as a Western alternative to the wave of powerful open models coming out of China. The Brooklyn-based startup, founded in 2024 by two former Google DeepMind researchers, announced the launch in a blog post on Monday, confirming weekend reports from Axios that a release was close.
Beam is aimed at coding and agentic tasks, and Reflection says it can reason through problems with three to four times less computing power than comparable open models. The company is positioning it as a cheaper, faster "workhorse" for enterprises, governments and developers who want to control their own AI systems rather than buy closed services or rely on Chinese technology.
Beam specs: 501B parameters, 1M token context
Reflection describes Beam as a text-only mixture-of-experts model, trained with high-compute reinforcement learning. The company published detailed figures in its launch post.
For comparison, the company points to Z.ai's GLM-5.2, released in June, which has far more total parameters but a similar active count.
- 501 billion total parameters, with 23 billion active per request
- Pre-trained on 23.8 trillion tokens
- 1 million token context window
- Text-only, no image or audio input
