The PHP development team has warned administrators to prepare for emergency security updates scheduled for Wednesday, October 21, at 14:00 UTC (10:00 AM Eastern), fixing two critical vulnerabilities each rated 9.2 under CVSS v4.0. In an advisory published Tuesday, the maintainers said they reserve the right to release earlier if details become public or if active exploitation appears in the wild.
That warning was triggered in part by an apparent leak. Security researchers at watchTowr told BleepingComputer that the two flaws, tracked as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, are remote code execution (RCE) bugs believed to affect PHP versions 5, 6, 7 and 8. With PHP powering WordPress, e-commerce platforms and countless custom web services, the patches matter to almost anyone running a website.
Two PHP RCE flaws rated 9.2
The PHP security team has not disclosed technical details, affected versions or the exact releases that will contain fixes. It says full information will be published when the updates are available. Administrators are encouraged to prepare now so they can upgrade as soon as the release lands.
There is a discrepancy in how the flaws are being scored. PHP assigned each a CVSS v4.0 score of 9.2, while watchTowr CEO Benjamin Harris and a now-deleted Hacker News post described them as CVSS 10.0. watchTowr says it has successfully reproduced CVE-2026-109618, is withholding technical details until patches ship, and has not observed exploitation in the wild.

- Severity: 9.2 under CVSS v4.0, per the PHP security team; watchTowr and a Hacker News post claim 10.0
