Opera has unveiled WebAI, a proposed web standard that lets AI models run directly inside its browser instead of in the cloud, according to TechCrunch. The feature is available now as an early preview in the flagship Opera One browser, with Opera GX and Opera Neon set to receive it later.
The move positions Opera as the first browser maker to offer built-in access to local AI models through a proposed standard. WebAI is backed by companies including Google and Microsoft, according to 9to5Mac, and is designed to be model-agnostic so users can choose among different AI providers.
Opera WebAI models and availability
At launch, Opera One users can tap into Google's Gemma open-weight model on all platforms, and on Macs they can also use Apple's on-device foundation model, 9to5Mac reports. Opera says WebAI is not tied to any single model and is built to support a wide range of open-weight AI systems.
The feature is opt-in and requires no subscription. Users control which websites and extensions can access local AI models, and the processing happens entirely on the user's device rather than on a company's servers.
