OpenAI has announced it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the startup behind Code Storage and a set of open-source developer tools. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either company.
The move matters because Pierre's libraries already sit inside OpenAI's coding agent Codex, and it lands shortly after OpenAI launched Pando, its own version control backend built for developers and AI agents working together. The acquisition still requires regulatory approval.
Pierre tools already inside Codex
According to The Decoder, Pierre's software is not a new addition to OpenAI's stack: three of its libraries are already used by Codex. That makes the acquisition less about buying a new product and more about owning technology OpenAI depends on.
The company's flagship product is Code Storage, which stores code and tracks its history through Git. Around it sits a family of open-source tools that developers interact with every day.
- Trees — fast navigation through a project's files.
- Diffs — shows code changes and lets users fix bugs directly in the diff view.
- Highlights — a real-time syntax highlighter that works as developers type or as an AI agent generates code.
