Apple took a record 22% of global smartphone shipments in the third quarter of 2026, the first time the iPhone has crossed the 20% mark in any Q3, according to Counterpoint Research. The same report says the overall market shrank 20% year over year, its weakest third quarter in 14 years.
Counterpoint attributes the slump to memory constraints and rising component prices. Apple's gain therefore came in a shrinking pool: the company shipped a smaller share of a far smaller market, and it still finished second behind Samsung.
iPhone Q3 2026 shipment share and the top five
The report places Apple at 22%, up from 18% a year earlier, closing the gap with Samsung at 23%. Every other brand in the top five lost ground compared with Q3 2025, which is how Apple's share rose even though its own shipment volumes fell year over year.
- Apple: 22% (up from 18% in Q3 2025)
- Samsung: 23%, still first
- Xiaomi: 10%
- OPPO: 9%
- vivo: 8%
- Global market: down 20% year over year, lowest Q3 in 14 years
