The iPhone Duo, Apple's first folding phone, went on sale today, and the first reports of broken units are already appearing. According to posts shared on Reddit, a handful of devices show damage on the inner screen, with the problem showing up in a similar spot each time: around the hinge, plus one or more bright lines running across the right side of the display.
The Verge reported on the posts, and Apple did not immediately reply to a request for comment. That means the extent of the problem is still unknown, so these early cases should be treated as isolated reports rather than a confirmed defect across the line.
What owners are describing
One user in Australia described hearing an audible crack as they opened the phone in front of a friend. In their account, they had owned the iPhone Duo for roughly six hours and had opened it fewer than 20 times. They said they felt something around the internal hinge, underneath the screen, moments before it broke along the hinge line.
The same user said there were no marks or damage on the inner screen surface or the external hinge that would suggest anything had been trapped inside. They added that an Apple Store replaced their phone with a brand-new unit on the spot.
