OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a new medium-tier model it describes as fast and efficient, combining detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use with clearer, more natural writing. The model is available starting today through ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API, according to 9to5Mac.
Terra was left out last month when OpenAI launched its GPT-6 Sol and Luna models, so today's update moves the mid-range option from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6.1. OpenAI is pricing it at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, roughly 50% below the GPT-5.6 Terra it replaces — a cut that makes long, computer-based workflows far cheaper to automate.
GPT-6.1 Terra specs and pricing
OpenAI positions GPT-6.1 Terra as a step up from GPT-5.6 Terra for the everyday tasks that fill a workday: drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos. The company says it is a significant advance over the older model on both communication and computer-based work.
The headline numbers are on accuracy and cost. On OpenAI's internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate at low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra — a drop of nearly 37 percentage points. At maximum effort, the error rate dropped 18 points to 4.3%, nearly matching GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, per 9to5Mac.
OpenAI's model lineup now runs from lowest to highest price and capability: Luna, Terra, Sol and Astra. GPT-6.1 Terra sits in the middle, aimed at teams that need more work done for longer without paying flagship prices.
