Cyberpunk 2077 is heading to the big screen. According to Deadline, cited by The Verge, Paramount Pictures is adapting CD Projekt Red's sci-fi video game franchise into a live-action film, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers movies, attached as a producer.
There is no word yet on a release date or on any cast. CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said the studio is excited about Paramount as a future partner that shares its creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise, adding that more details will be shared at the appropriate time. For a game that launched in rocky fashion in 2020, the move confirms how far the franchise has travelled since.
A franchise that has sold over 40 million copies
The movie project lands on top of a very good run for CD Projekt Red. The company recently announced that Cyberpunk 2077 has surpassed 40 million copies sold, a turnaround from its troubled 2020 debut.
The franchise has already proved it works outside gaming. Netflix adapted it into a hit anime, and a second season of that show is debuting later this month. A sequel game, which CD Projekt Red is calling Cyberpunk 2, is in development too, with the studio reporting recently that 184 people are working on it.
A busy moment for Paramount
The Cyberpunk 2077 film arrives just after Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery completed a megamerger under the Skydance name. The company is clearly leaning on big brands for its film slate.
Paramount is also working on a Call of Duty film for 2028, alongside a Street Fighter movie debuting on October 16th. Whether the Cyberpunk movie joins that same pipeline is unknown for now, since no window has been given.
