A tampered version of Anthropic's Claude Code extension for VS Code was live on Cursor's extension marketplace for several hours on Thursday, and Anthropic now says a malicious actor used access to that marketplace to publish a copy of the extension it never built or distributed itself.
The backdoored build, version 2.1.313, was available for roughly 11 hours and affected at most 5,000 users, according to Cursor. Anthropic published a clean version, 2.1.314, a few hours after the rogue one appeared. Neither company has explained how the attacker got control of the publishing channel.
What Anthropic and Cursor say happened
In a post on X on Friday, Anthropic technical staff member Felix Rieseberg said the company is working with Cursor on the incident but stressed it was not a compromise of Anthropic's systems or employee laptops. "A malicious actor used access to Cursor's marketplace to publish a tampered copy of the Claude Code extension, which we didn't build or publish," he wrote, adding that the company's official channels were not affected and that only Cursor users were impacted.
Anthropic security team member David Dworken echoed that message, saying the incident did not involve any Anthropic system and that the company was not involved in building, publishing or hosting the malicious version. Cursor said in its Thursday security alert that the malicious versions were not developed by Anthropic, but neither company has answered questions about how the upload happened or whether it followed a breach at Cursor.
Claude Code backdoor capabilities
Cursor described what the malicious extension was built to do once installed. According to the company, it attempted to install a persistent SSH backdoor by adding an attacker-controlled SSH key, enabling the local SSH service and opening a reverse SSH tunnel, with code written to run on Windows, macOS and Linux.
