Apple is preparing its biggest smart home push yet, built around a new display hub called the HomeView. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the device will be announced on Tuesday, October 13, at an event Apple is calling 'Welcome home'.
The HomeView would be Apple's first dedicated smart home display and the centrepiece of a wider strategy that also includes refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini hardware, plus a range of accessories made with partners such as LG and Schneider. According to Techmeme's summary of Gurman's reporting, the accessories include smart thermostats, door locks and doorbells designed to work closely with Apple's ecosystem.
HomeView specs and design
Gurman's report, relayed by 9to5Mac, describes a device with a design reminiscent of the iMac G4: a floating display sitting on top of a speaker base. The hub is expected to run on an A18 chip and to ship in the middle of November, after its October announcement.
A second, wall-mountable version will also exist, with a square base instead of the speaker. Colour options differ between the two models: space gray, silver, starlight and pink for the speaker version, and only monochrome silver or space gray for the wall-mounted one.
