Apple has officially unveiled the HomeView, its first-ever smart display, at an event in New York City. The 7-inch square device costs $299 and comes in two versions: one with a speaker base and one designed for wall mounting. Preorders are open now, with shipments starting November 13.
The launch marks Apple's biggest push into the smart home yet, arriving alongside new cameras, thermostats, and a door lock built for Apple Home. The HomeView also works as a smart home hub, Matter controller, and Thread Border Router, putting it in direct competition with Google's Nest Hub and Amazon's Echo Show.
Apple HomeView specs and features
Under the aluminum body sits Apple's A18 chip. The 7-inch Liquid Retina display supports True Tone and can dim from 500 nits to 0.3 nits, which Apple says is the lowest brightness it has ever engineered on a screen. A 12-megapixel Center Stage camera and a four-microphone array handle FaceTime calls and facial recognition.
The HomeView doesn't run iOS or iPadOS. Instead it uses a dedicated HomeView software with no App Store, offering a curated set of apps including FaceTime, Messages, Safari, and Spotify. Developers can port existing CarPlay apps, and if your iPhone already has one installed, it can appear on the HomeView automatically.
To get the most out of the device, you need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer with Apple Intelligence support. Setup isn't possible with an iPad.
