Apple's rumored HomeView smart home hub may soon double as a security camera. According to code strings found by Reddit user pdfu in the HomeView 27.2 software, Apple is preparing a Secure Video mode that would bring motion detection, live streaming and recording to the device, as reported by The Verge.
The discovery has not been confirmed by Apple, and the company has not said anything publicly about adding camera features to HomeView. If accurate, the move would expand Apple's smart home push and open a new product category, one where Google's Pixel Tablet already offers some competition.
What the HomeView 27.2 code strings reveal
The leaked strings describe a security camera mode with a setup page that explicitly reads: "Your HomeView can be used as a security camera with HomeKit Secure Video." They also point to privacy features designed to make the feature fit Apple's marketing focus.
According to pdfu, the video feeds would only be visible to members of the home. When someone is watching the feed or when recording starts, the device would show an indicator light and play a sound. Home members would also get a notification whenever settings for Secure Video mode are changed.
- Motion detection and live streaming options
- Recording controls with customizable settings
- Privacy indicator light and sound when viewing or recording
- Notifications for any settings changes
