Anthropic announced on October 18, 2026 that it is committing a portion of its shares to a new entity called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. Subject to stockholder approval, 5% of the company's shares will be committed today, with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in Anthropic's value above a set baseline.
The move matters because it ties the company's growing valuation directly to public-interest funding. Anthropic says that when combined with pledges already made by its co-founders and employees, roughly 20% of its shares will be dedicated to the public good, plus any extra percentage triggered by future valuation milestones.
How the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund works
The fund is structured as a wholly-owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) or another format, a choice Anthropic says gives it adjustability between different forms of giving. As a public benefit corporation, Anthropic already houses research on AI safety and interpretability, applied biomedical research, and discounts on Claude for nonprofits and scientific institutions directly inside the company.
The new fund is meant to add flexibility and scale beyond those internal activities. Anthropic says it might explore large donations to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. One example it gives is labor market impacts: AI may generate enormous economic value, but it could also cause instability for many workers.
Anthropic has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing that issue, but says bolder approaches may be needed given the pace of AI progress. The company states that none of the Anthropic equity held by the LLC will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad.
Anthropic's 20% public good pledge in context
The announcement builds on commitments made at the company's founding, when Anthropic's co-founders pledged to donate 80% of their equity holdings. Since then, Anthropic has also run an equity donation match program that lets employees pledge equity which the company matches, with approximately half of employees participating.
