Anthropic has hit a milestone that says a lot about where the AI industry is heading: its internal use of Claude, valued at the prices it charges customers, now exceeds its monthly employee compensation. The company disclosed the figure in its IPO filing, according to Business Insider.
The numbers are striking. In April, the retail value of Claude used internally passed Anthropic's monthly payroll costs, excluding stock awards. By September, that internal AI usage had surged more than 250-fold since January. More than 90% of the code added to its software that month was written by Claude.
What Anthropic's IPO Filing Actually Shows
There is an important distinction to keep in mind. Anthropic is not spending more cash on AI than it pays in salaries — it is valuing its own internal AI consumption at the retail prices it charges customers. That accounting choice is what produces the headline number.
Even so, the trend is hard to ignore. Business Insider's Alistair Barr reported in March that tech companies were starting to treat AI tokens — the main unit for measuring usage — as a fourth component of employee compensation, alongside salary, bonuses and stock awards. Anthropic's disclosure offers the clearest evidence yet of why that idea is gaining ground: revenue has grown far faster than headcount.
- April: internal Claude usage, at retail prices, exceeded monthly employee compensation excluding stock awards
- September: internal AI usage up more than 250-fold since January
- Over 90% of code added to Anthropic's software in September was written by Claude
