The AI data center buildout is about to accelerate sharply. In a new report published by SemiAnalysis, analysts Jeremie Eliahou Ontiveros, Reyk Knuhtsen and Dylan Patel project that companies will add more than 50GW of new data center capacity in 2027 alone, a step change from anything the industry has built before.
The research counts 60GW of capacity already under construction and 24GW across 40 campuses in advanced stages of development, according to Techmeme's summary of the report. SemiAnalysis also says $1.3 trillion in lease contracts have been signed year to date, a figure that shows how much money has already been committed to the buildout.
SemiAnalysis data center forecast: the key numbers
The headline figure is 50GW added in a single year. For context, that is a scale of construction that would have seemed implausible only a few years ago, and it explains why the report is titled "Datacenters 2027: The Year of Acceleration."
- 50GW+ of new data center capacity projected for 2027 alone
- 60GW currently under construction
- 24GW across 40 campuses in advanced stages
- $1.3 trillion in lease contracts signed year to date
- Warning that the shortage could shift from power and buildings to chips
